The Sacraments

Anointing of the Sick

Christ draws near with strength,
peace, courage, and healing grace.

What it is

Healing, not only “Last Rites”

The Anointing of the Sick is often confused with the “Last Rites,” but it is not reserved only for the final moments of life.

A priest anoints the sick person with blessed oil and prays for Christ's healing grace. The sacrament offers spiritual strength, forgiveness, peace, and, when God wills it, physical healing.

Who should receive it

When to ask

  • When a person becomes seriously ill.
  • Before major surgery because of a serious condition.
  • When illness becomes more serious.
  • When an elderly person becomes notably frail.

The sacrament may be received again if the condition worsens or a new serious illness develops. Do not wait until the final hours to call.
